Scholarships

What are the DAAD Scholarships?

DAAD scholarships, offered by the German Academic Exchange Service, provide financial support for international students to study or research in Germany, targeting undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral candidates. They typically cover tuition (if applicable), monthly stipends (€861–€1,300), travel costs, and health insurance, varying by program and eligibility.

Am I eligible for a DAAD Scholarship?

Eligibility for these awards is pretty straightforward though the DAAD scholarship is highly competitive. You typically need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree for master’s-level scholarships or research grants and a Master’s degree for doctoral qualifications. Proof through recognized tests (IELTS/TOEFL) is also requested. You will also need two years of professional experience relevant to the field of study or research.

You will have to demonstrate Academic Excellence & Motivation. This is demonstrated through transcripts, research proposals, and letters of motivation/recommendation.

How are DAAD Scholars Selected?

DAAD scholars are selected using the following broad criteria:

  • Academic Merit

Strong academic record and clarity of research or study goals.

  • Relevance of Field of Study

Alignment with DAAD’s program objectives or Germany’s broader educational and research priorities.

  • Motivation and Career Plans

Evident leadership potential, commitment to social impact, or strong research interest.

  • Feasibility and Quality of Proposal

Particularly important for research grants—well-defined objectives, methodology, and timeline.

  • Language Skills

Sufficient proficiency to complete the proposed program.
